I had the privilege of getting very close to Erika, especially these last two years. So naturally, I wanted to do something nice to honor her here today.
When looking over readings, I was struck by one; in part, because it reminded me of the last fun time we had together as a family.
Although Erika wasn't religious, she loved ritual. So, last Dec., the 4 of us (her two sons, she and I) gathered on the 4th of Advent, and enjoyed cookies, coffee and conversation, after having lit the centerpiece – an Advent wreath of four candles.
So, for Erika today, I read:
Four Candles for You
by Unknown
The first candle represents our grief.
The pain of losing you is intense.
It reminds us of the depth of our love for you.
This second candle represents our courage.
To confront our sorrow,
To comfort each other,
To change our lives.
This third candle we light in your memory.
For the times we laughed,
The times we cried,
The times we were angry with each other,
The silly things you did,
The caring and joy you gave us.
This fourth candle we light for our love.
We light this candle that your light will always shine.
We cherish the special place in our hearts
that will always be reserved for you.
We thank you for the gift
your living brought to each of us.
We loved you
and will miss you.
