10/08/10: Day 15: A drive into Yosemite and back out
This day is entirely in the captions. I recommend clicking on the first picture and following them through.
Here are 24 excerpts of the few hundred shots we took. One really cannot convey the grandeur of such places in the dynamic range of any flat medium. Yet, here you are.
We had a nice breakfast in the trailer, and got on the road with John and Jade riding in back around 11:00. The road up to the south entrance of Yosemite National Park is very winding, and had road construction. So we sat and waited several times. It took about an hour and a half to get to the park gate. But then we made a right, and wandered around the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias \(http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/mg.htm\). This shot is of Jade and John and one of the tall trees.

A wider view of the Mariposa Grove. See the people under the trees?

Karen shows how Dan deals with the stress of one of the many delays for road work.

Dan plays it close to the edge. The best views are from out there. However, the photos don't evoke the depth, the aroma, the grandeur of this area. Yall have to come out here.To get to this roadside spot, Karen made a sudden left into a once and future pull-out that is currently a drop down from the pavement onto gravel. Quite exciting.

Bridal Veil Falls seen from a distance. Note how it leaps from the cliff to disperse in spray before reaching the bottom.

A zoom-in on Bridal Veil from the same distant location.

Here's the tunnel leading to that Bridal Veil overlook. Note the lack of a concrete lining. Natural basalt is good structural material.

Karen catches me defying authority, just like everyone else at the base of Bridal Veil Falls

Lunch. Kippers, crackers, beverages, and miscellaneous noshables eaten by a river in Yosemite National Park.

My little camera sat bravely among the sequoias taking a long time lapse of a cliff while we had lunch, out of sight just over a gully.
This is the cliff subject of the time lapse. Those tiny green bumps at the top are more sequoias. Very tall.

Across the water, a couple of peaceful tourists sat and read. A beautiful setting.

In case you didn't know: I like reflections and contrasts. Life and death intertwine in this image.

I looked up and saw a wood ear under a cluster of knots. Or is it the face of (random famous person here)?
We stopped at the foot of El Capitain and saw people looking through telescopes. At what, Karen asked?
So I zoomed in on the top third of the cliff, El Capitain. See the little red dot? That's a hanging base camp tent. See the darker dots down and left?
Here are the darker dots on El Capitain, as I zoomed in. I may grumble about several characteristics of my new Canon SX20, but the long zoom and anti-vibration is good compensation!

A final stop at Horsetail Falls, with Karen and John walking out to see the trickle left at the end of a long summer.

We took a different road back, to avoid the construction delays on Rt 41 out the South Gate. But we found that there was also a problem on Rt 140 out the South-West Gate. We waited for a while at this one-lane bridge. Once over, we found out what the trouble was. Unfortunately, there was no place to stop to take a picture of the rock slide that had covered a quarter mile of the original road.

Crossing a temporary one-lane bridge to bypass a rock slide. We got home to the RV park around 8. John cooked up some salmon and veggies, and we called it a night.
